As a young girl about six years old, I lived on the edge of the Black mountains, I loved reading, could read when I was three, my father was not amused when he caught me reading The News of the World ( I was banned) at three! I became fascinated with sugar cane after seeing a picture in a book... (Yes he then threw the paper on the open fire and set the chimney on fire)
When my Vince asked me to marry him, I was over the moon, he then said he would take me to Mauritius for our honeymoon, he said you will be able to see the sugar cane.
Sure, enough after a long flight, we arrived at a beautiful hotel, which inspired my painting “Breakfast on the Balcony.”
Vince booked a taxi to take us around the island, into view came a luscious field of sugar cane, I cannot tell you the excitement I felt and I couldn’t believe what I saw, local people cutting the cane by hand, there was a stocky man with muscles rippling in the sun drenched in sweat, smiling as he worked, I walked over the crunchy cane to say hello, there was also quite a few women cutting to.
The vibrant atmosphere, the smell of the cane, the welcoming smiles, and even the colourful lunch baskets on old bicycles made the experience unforgettable, a dream come true.
When we returned home, I was inspired to create the Honeymoon Collection, including “The Cane Cutters” and “Breakfast on the Balcony,” both available as limited-edition prints.
